Fabian's Take
CPO & Chief AI Officer
"GPT Image is often not bad at all, but usually not as good as Nano Banana Pro. Its strength is convenience β if you're already in a ChatGPT conversation and need a quick visual, it's right there. For anything important, I reach for Nano Banana Pro instead."
Full Review
GPT Image (now at version 1.5) is OpenAIβs built-in image generation capability within ChatGPT. It went viral when it first launched as β4o image generationβ in early 2025, particularly for its ability to generate Studio Ghibli-style images. The latest version is a solid improvement, but it still sits behind the best dedicated image generators.
The Convenience Factor
GPT Imageβs biggest advantage is that itβs just there. Youβre already chatting with ChatGPT, you need an image β just ask for it. No switching tools, no separate subscriptions, no uploading prompts to a different service. This makes it the fastest path from idea to image for most people.
The conversational editing workflow is genuinely useful: generate an image, then say βmake the background darkerβ or βadd more peopleβ and iterate naturally. This is more intuitive than the parameter-driven workflows of tools like Midjourney or FLUX-2-Pro.
Quality: Good Enough for Many Use Cases
GPT Image 1.5 has improved significantly over its predecessor. It handles photorealism better, follows instructions more precisely, and produces cleaner output overall. For social media posts, quick mockups, or illustrative images in documents, itβs perfectly adequate.
However, side-by-side with Nano Banana Pro, the difference is noticeable. Nano Banana Pro produces more physically accurate lighting, sharper details, and better text rendering. GPT Image tends toward a subtle warm/yellow cast and occasionally produces less coherent compositions.
Who Should Use GPT Image
Anyone already paying for ChatGPT Plus who needs occasional image generation without the overhead of a separate tool. Itβs a solid βgood enoughβ option that covers 70-80% of use cases. For professional or high-stakes visuals, use Nano Banana Pro instead.
